'1 초', 순간에서 영원으로
임현락의 〈1 초 수묵〉에서 1 초는 찰나와 영원이 합류하는 시간과 공간의 특별한 짜임이다. 그는 끊임없이 그 곳으로 되돌아가서 창조의 근원을 찾고자 한다. 1 초는 수묵의 본질인 생명의 기운을 화폭 위로 뿜어내기 직전, 집중과 긴장으로 일순간 화석이 되어버린 시간의 멈춤, 즉 순간의 확장을 의미한다. 이 멈춤 안에서 시간은 더 이상 쪼갤 수도, 더 이상 늘일 수도 없는, 오로지 작가만이 포착할 수 있는 영원 같은 한 순간으로 변모한다.

〈1 초 수묵〉은 대구에서 재작년에 열린 그의 개인전에서 무심한 듯 휙휙 획을 그은 길고 가느다란 투명 페트를 전시장 바닥에 촘촘히 심는 데서 시작됐다. 천정에서 길게 늘어뜨려 마치 바닥에서 솟아오르는 듯한 모양으로 작가는 지나가는 바람에 흔들리고 한줄기 빛에도 미세하게 반응하는 '수묵생명체'를 만들었다. 바로 앞선 전시회에서 선보였던 화면 속 들풀의 하늘거림을 공간에서 구현하고자 한 시도였다. 삭막한 도심의 시멘트 바닥 틈 사이로 싹을 틔우고 하늘을 향해 손짓하는 이름 모를 들풀을 발견하는 순간, 작가는 생명을 향한 한없는 감동으로 온 몸이 짜릿해지는 경험을 했다고 한다. 삼라만상에 대한 애린(愛隣)을 다시 발견하고 생명을 노래하게 된 순간이다. 임현락은 화단에서 그를 주목하게 만든 '나무들 서다' 연작에서 1 획의 기개를 아낌없이 보여주었다. 2000년, 갓 마흔의 나이에 겪은 대장암 수술과 긴 치료의 시간을 의연히 이겨내면서 탄생한 이 작품은 그의 삶에서 각별한 의미를 가진다. 분주한 사회생활 속에서 시간의 흐름에 쫒기다 보니 이 소중한 체험을 망각하며 살다가 들풀의 생명력을 발견하는 순간, 망각으로부터 솟구쳐서 새로이 선사되는 시간의 소중한 선물을 얻게 된다.

...그는 1 획의 정수를 추출해 삼차원 공간에 펼쳐 보였다. 투명한 폴리카보네이트 위로 유성 잉크를 품은 굵은 붓이 지나간 자리에 긴박하고 치열한 순간의 흔적이 여과 없이 드러난다. " 〈1 초 수묵〉에서 한지와 먹은 사용하지 않으나 호흡으로 분출되는 신체와 정신의 합일을 통해 수묵화의 새로운 전통을 모색하고 있다"는 작가의 말에 고개가 끄떡여진다.
...이번 전시는 현기증이 날 정도로 급속히 유행이 변하고 상업주의가 범람한 오늘날 미술시장의 흐름을 역류하고 있다. '충격 가치'가 범람하는 시대를 사는 우리에게 삶의 본질적 가치, 관조와 성찰의 잔잔한 울림을 전달한다. 수묵의 전통을 새롭게 해석하며 실험과 도전정신을 잃지 않는 작가는 21세기 수묵화의 청사진을 보여주고 있다. 왜냐하면, 생명의 원천에 대한 물음은 시간의 프리즘을 통해 확신, 안정, 지혜 같은 모습으로 우리의 영혼을 정화해주는 신비한 힘을 가졌기 때문이다.

“One second,” from instant to eternity
In Lim Hyun-Lak’s One-second Ink Wash Painting, one second is a special weave of space and time in which instant and eternity join. He looks for the source of creation. One second stands for the pause of time, that is to say an expansion of an instant just before pouring out the energy of life and the nature of ink through concentration and tension. Time turns to a moment only the artist can capture. It is like an eternity that cannot be split and extended.

One-second Ink Wash Painting began by implanting long, thin, transparent strips of PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) on which he dashed off strokes of brush unintentionally at his solo show held in Daegu last year. Lim created “ink life forms” swaying in the wind and reacting minutely to a ray of light. They look like they are soaring up from the floor, suspended from the ceiling. This work was an attempt to embody the swaying of wild plants he demonstrated in his previous art show. It is said that he experienced a thrilling moment, touched by life forms when he discovered unknown plants growing from the cracks of a cement floor in a desolate city. It was the moment he sang the song of life after feeling affection for all things in heaven and earth. He fully displayed the spirit of one stroke in the series Trees Stand with which he drew the attention of the art scene. This series, produced after getting over colorectal cancer he suffered at 40 in 2000, is especially meaningful in his life. Pressed for time with a hectic social life, he forgot this invaluable experience but he recovered it as the moment he discovered the life force of wild plants.

He unfolds one stroke in three-dimensional space, eliciting its essence. The trace of pressing, urgent moments is disclosed with thick brush strokes of oil-based ink on transparent strips of PET. We can appreciate when he says “I do not use hanji or traditional Korean paper and ink in One-second Ink Wash Painting but explore the new tradition of ink wash painting through the unity of body and spirit.”
This exhibition flows against the stream of the art market today where the fashion changes by the minute and commercialism is rampant. It brings us the underlying value of life and the serene resonance of contemplation and introspection in the world where “shocking value” prevails. Lim provides a blueprint for 21st century ink wash painting without losing his experimental and defiant spirit, newly interpreting the tradition of ink wash painting. His question about the origin of life may have the mysterious force to purify our souls, also bringing us confidence, stability, and wisdom through the prism of time.
